Polycrylene® (INCI Name: Polyester-8) is a copolymer of Adipic Acid and Neopentyl Glycol that is terminated with Cyanodiphenyl Propenoic Acid (average MW ~1900 daltons). To improve handling, a small percentage of polymer molecules are terminated at one end with Octyldodecanol.

The cyanodiphenyl propenoate moiety absorbs solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation with a peak at 303 nm. On a weight-to-weight basis, three grams of Polycrylene® absorbs roughly as much UV radiation as one gram of Octocrylene. Therefore, at recommended use levels of 1-4%, its minimal UVB absorbance will not directly affect SPF. Nonetheless, Polycrylene® retains Octocrylene’s ability to photo stabilize Avobenzone via a triplet quenching mechanism, albeit with somewhat lower, but still impressive, efficiency. It also works synergistically with Corapan® TQ (Diethylhexyl 2,6-Naphthalate) to photo stabilize Avobenzone.

Polycrylene® may also improve the substantivity of sunscreen formulations as measured by resistance to wash-off. For example, a sunscreen formulation containing 3% Polycrylene® was substantially more water resistant than a similar formulation without Polycrylene® after immersion in a water bath for 20 minutes.

SolaStay S1 is a viscous yellow liquid designed for use in skin care and sun care products. It is a highly efficient singlet state quencher for Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone) and Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Octinoxate). Indeed, it outperforms Octocrylene as an Avobenzone photostabilizer, photostabilizes Octinoxate and Avobenzone when formulated together, is an outstanding solvent for crystalline UV filters, is easily emulsified, and is suitable for use in lotion, cream, spray, stick, and gel formulations.

At a recommended use level in sunscreens equal to the weight percentage of Avobenzone in the formulation (typically 2 – 3%), the result is new heights in broad spectrum UVA and UVB photoprotection.  Used at 1-3% with mineral UV filters and/or cosmetic colorants, it mitigates the photocatalytic and reactive oxygen species-generating activities of these oxides.

SolaStay® S1 has also been documented to substantially photostabilize Cholecalciferol, Resveratrol, Retinol, Retinyl Palmitate, and Ubiquinone, which may be incorporated in skin care products for their anti-aging and other benefits. The recommended usage levels for SolaStay® S1 to photostabilize these products is 3 – 5%.

It is effective as a sunscreen actives solvent, inorganic pigment wetter, emollient, moisturizer, and carrier. A low viscosity liquid of high polarity with elegant slip and feel, it is useful as a solvent and emollient in topical preparations for skin and hair. HallBrite BHB significantly increases the in vivo SPF performance of sun protection products through the reduction of electron transfer and photoprotection mechanisms.

HallBrite BHB combines lower potential irritation compared to similar materials, excellent spreadability, added substantivity in the presence of water, and a pleasant, moisturizing skin feel. This nanoparticle-free ingredient may be added at up to 3% in finished sunscreen formulations without objectionable whitening of the skin during rub-in.”

HALLBRITE® T-97 is easily added to the oil phase of a formulation. Addition of Hallbrite T-97 when the oil phase is of low viscosity (e.g., when heated and before any rheological aids are added) maximizes dispersion and, consequently, efficacy. Introduction with a homogenizer, colloid mill or other high shear equipment is not always necessary but helps ensure its thorough dispersion. Adequate dispersion is necessary to achieve minimum skin whitening during, and subsequent to, application of the finished sunscreen product.

HallBrite T-97 typically contributes about 1.5 – 2.0 SPF units per percent utilized in sunscreen formulations and also contributes appreciably to shorter wavelength UVA protection.
