AEROSIL® R 812 S: AEROSIL® fumed silica has many applications in hair care products, particularly Dry Shampoo, providing an easy alternative to time-consuming wet washing and drying. Combined with other powder ingredients, AEROSIL® provides a volumizing effect to styling aids, and since Dry Water contains mostly an aqueous phase by weight, the formulation also moisturizes the hair.

AEROSIL® R 812 S provides effective rheology control in complex liquid systems.

Dry Water Concept

Water or dilute aqueous solutions can be converted to a dry powder with the help of superhydrophobic AEROSIL® R 812. The powdery product can contain up to

95 % w/w of an aqueous phase. Under mechanical stress, for example, when the product is rubbed onto the skin, the water is released. In this way, solutions containing vitamins, plant extracts and/or other active ingredients can be converted to powdered products. “Dry Water” is created by producing fine water droplets in the presence of the hydrophobic AEROSIL® during a high shear mixing process. While mixing the fine water droplets are coated by the hydrophobic silica which prevents the water droplets from coalescing.

AEROSIL® R 812 S Silica Silylate

AGENAJEL 20.383 is a cook-up starch. It has to be heated up (gelatinized) in an aqueous phase (water) for thickening effect – but it has a lower gelatinization temperature (~ 60°C) than native starches (~ 80°C). AGENAJEL 20.383 shows excellent stability against heat, acid, shear, freezing and thawing. It is ideal for use as a thickener in shampoos, face wash, creams, and lotions.

Up to now our starches were mainly used as a granular powder as absorbent, mattifying agent and feel enhancer. A completely new concept is to use starches as thickeners in surfactant systems like liquid shampoos and conditioners. Ideal thickeners are chemically modified starches with INCI (Sodium) Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate. They are produced from renewable raw materials but are neither Organic (“Bio”) nor are they suitable for COSMOS. Since shampoos & body washes are fully released into the sewage system it is, in our opinion, a definite advantage that they are completely biodegradable and food-compliant. AGRANA developed 2 new starches also for SLS-free surfactant systems: AGENAJEL 20.383 is a cook-up starch. It has to be heated up (gelatinized) in the aqueous phase (water) for thickening effect – but it has a lower gelatinization temperature (~ 60°C) than native starches (~ 80°C). AGENAJEL 20.313 is a cold water swellable starch. It can be used in cold processed applications for thickening and is comparable to bench-mark STRUCTURE XL from Akzo Nobel which is also cold water swellable. We developed starches as alternative thickener system to conventional sulfate-shampoos, thickened with SLS (= Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and salt and/or petroleum-based polymers like acrylates. More and more SLS – free shampoos/conditioners have gained importance owing to a lower degree of irritation to both skin & hair. Consequently, we are confident that our grades will definitely find their place in the market.

ANTIL® 171 is especially suitable for the modern preparation of e. g. shampoos, shower and bath preparations in a cold process, where it is necessary to use liquid thickening agents, which are easy to bring into the production process at any time, even into the final formulation. Effective thickening properties combined with optimal processability make ANTIL® 171 a universal thickening agent. Furthermore a pleasant refatting effect can be achieved by using ANTIL® 171. Cosmetic formulations, which are thickened by ANTIL® 171, show a nearly newtonean (ideal viscous) flow behaviour contrary to NaCl, which leads to an extremely strong shear thinning behaviour.

ANTIL® HS 60 combines the properties of a thickener, superfatting agent and secondary surfactant in one product. Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Glycerol Monolaurate are combined in a liquid, easy to handle raw material for superior and mild shampoos, shower baths and other kind of body cleansing preparations.
